What Do I Need For International Travel?

Check to make sure you have all the essentials to make sure your travel is as hassle-free as possible.

Make sure you are well prepared for your trip.

There is nothing worse than having to scramble last minute to get the things you need. Plan ahead for your trip to make it as easy as possible.

1

Travel Documents

A valid passport is a must for all international travel and is the only document you will likely need if traveling to Europe. Other parts of the world may require you to have visa paperwork and shot records. Check ahead of time to see if your destination requires more than your passport. If you are renting a car on your vacation, you will need a driver’s license. Some countries also require an international driver’s permit which you can get through AAA.

2

Power Adapter

Power outlets outside the US require different plug ends so you will need to make sure you have a travel adapter.

3

Appropriate clothing and footwear

Check the weather for your intended destination. You don’t want to be in shorts and a t-shirt when the weather is cold or in heavy thick clothes when it’s eighty five degrees. Some places have dress codes so be aware of that as well. Comfortable shoes are a necessity if you are going to be doing a lot of walking. Nothing worse than getting blisters or sore feet and not being able to walk around and see all the amazing sites.

4

Foreign Currency

You may need cash for places you are visiting and will need the currency for the country you are visiting. We withdraw money at an ATM at our destination instead of bringing US currency and exchanging it. Make sure you notify your bank or credit cards that you will be traveling outside the US so they do not decline any foreign transactions for security reasons.

5

International Phone Plan or Foreign Sim Card

Your domestic phone plan will not work outside your home country without an international plan. Sign up for a plan through your phone carrier which usually costs around ten dollars per day when using your phone outside your country. Alternatively you can buy a foreign sim card at your destination to put in your phone, which can be the cheaper option but will change your phone number to a foreign one while using it. E-Sim cards are also an option you can consider. WhatsApp will most likely be necessary to download, if you don’t already have it, to communicate in Europe with AirBnB hosts.

6

Important Phone Numbers or Websites

Make sure you have any phone numbers you may need such as customer service numbers for credit cards in case they are stolen. Be aware of any websites you may need like the State Department’s website in case of trouble overseas.
